overview
A brand built to make AI in higher education feel trustworthy, not threatening.
Collage AI arrived with a challenge sharper than most early startups face: they were building an AI product for the very audience most likely to see AI as a threat. The team — coming out of StudyWise — was building an AI platform to help university faculty design, deliver, and assess personalized learning.
The product was broad and ambitious. The brand was a placeholder. And they were about to start putting it in front of educators at Harvard, MIT, and Northeastern.
They didn’t need a logo. They needed a brand that could carry a new category into a room full of skeptics.

02
The moment
Higher education is wary of AI. Faculty worry about being replaced, institutions worry about trust. The Collage AI team felt this acutely — early on, someone on their side pointed at the Tesla logo and said: that immediately reads as “we’re replacing the old thing.” They didn’t want that.
Their intention was the opposite: to support educators, not displace them. So the brand had a tightrope to walk. It had to signal AI and innovation without reading as cold, disruptive, or anti-teacher. It had to feel credible to academics without looking like the dated tools they were tired of.

What we did
We leaned into the difference — respectfully. In branding, every category has a visual language. You can speak it to blend in, or break from it on purpose. We chose the second, deliberately.
→ We rejected the convention. Almost every AI product defaults to purple — the unofficial “AI color.” We walked away from it. Instead we built on a warm beige base: steady, human, grounded. The color of paper and thought, not circuitry.
→ We made serif the differentiator. In a sea of geometric sans-serif tech logos, a serif typeface reads as intellectual, established, trustworthy — the language of the academy, not the startup demo. It let Collage AI signal innovation that respects the institution it’s entering.
→ We named the metaphor into the identity. A collage is many worlds composed into one — and that became the system. Fragments drawn from across the academic landscape, arranged with the structural logic of AI.Holding it all, a visible human hand doing the composing. Because that's the promise of the product itself: technology provides the structure, but a person shapes the whole.
→ We kept the humans in frame. Rather than hide behind abstract AI visuals, the identity made room for educators and students — because the product’s whole promise is to give faculty more time with students, not less.

The result
Collage AI walked into those first conversations with a brand that did the hard work before a word was spoken: it made an AI tool feel safe for academics. The founders described seeing the identity for the first time as feeling supportive, reliable, and unmistakably AI — without a hint of the K-12 brightness or cold-tech edge they’d feared.
A complete identity — logo, type system, color world, illustration direction, and the start of a brand language — delivered in a 10-day Sprint for Good™. Not a placeholder. A foundation built to scale with the vision.
